Chapter 13

The scene in front of me was nothing short of brutal. The Viscous Overfiend loomed over a dozen or so adventurers who were locked in a desperate struggle against it, with its massive, ever-shifting form absorbing and deflecting their attacks.

The air reeked of acid and blood, and the ground was littered with the remnants of fallen fighters—some torn apart in grotesque ways, others reduced to formless puddles, dissolving under the creature’s corrosive touch. It was a sickening sight.

The survivors were barely holding on. The front-liners' armor was shattered, their weapons worn down to the point of uselessness. Their movements were sluggish, weighed down by exhaustion. Their mana reserves were likely running on fumes—if they hadn’t already run dry.

"This thing just won’t go down!" a man shouted, his voice strained with fatigue as he swung his sword at the Overfiend. In response, one of the swordsmen was sent flying; his shield snapping apart under the sheer force of the monster’s blow. He stumbled back to his feet, gasped, his face twisted with exhaustion. "We’re running out of time!" he panted.

"Keep your spirits up, everyone!" bellowed a burly fighter with a giant hammer. "We can do this together!"

The Overfiend let out a wet, gurgling roar as its massive form expanded and contracted, lashing out at the adventurers. Despite its wounds, it still dominated the fight.

The guild was crumbling—strength fading, morale cracking under relentless pressure. I realized then that I couldn’t just stand by. If they lost this battle, I’d be next.

I needed to escape, but as I scanned the battlefield, my stomach dropped—there was no exit in sight. Panic crept in, tightening around my chest.

"Leader, I get where you're coming from," one of the adventurers said grimly. "But let's face it—this isn't looking good. More than half our team is dead, and we're barely making any progress. We need to consider pulling back."

"We can't retreat," the leader replied firmly. "We've invested too much in this raid to give up now. We must push on."

A woman holding a staff stepped forward. "He's right. We're about to die a meaningless death if we continue. Please, reconsider!"

The debate continued, with most of the group in favor of retreat while the leader stubbornly insisted on pressing forward. The tension was palpable, and the weight of their disagreement grew heavier with each passing moment. As time dragged on, the deaths of their comrades took its toll. One by one, they fell, unable to withstand the mounting fear and stress.

"WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!" the leader bellowed in disbelief.

Those who had argued for retreat broke ranks and fled in desperation, leaving behind a small group to face the boss alone.

"Your poor planning and stubbornness have led us here, leader! We won't sacrifice ourselves for your greed and thirst for prestige!" someone shouted.

I watched as they ran past the Overfiend, surprised by their sudden retreat. My curiosity drew me to a side gap in the wall—the exit had been hidden all along by the boss's massive form.
